Avelis Health

A Y Combinator startup that started by fighting patients’ medical bills, then pivoted to auditing every claim for self-insured employers before the money moves.

A $250,000 bill and an app

Angel Onuoha had three knee surgeries between his mid-teens and his twenties. The bills, he has said in interviews, added up to more than $250,000 for care he believes should have cost far less.

“What inspired me to start Avelis was having to fight down over $250K of inflated hospital bills as a result of these procedures,” he told AFROTECH in an interview reported by Yahoo Finance and UrbanGeekz in June 2025. “If I was struggling with this system, I knew millions of other Americans were facing the same problem without the resources to fight back. The medical billing system is broken, 100 million Americans have medical debt, and 50-80% of bills have errors in them.”

He and co-founder Ahmad Shehu built a consumer tool first: an AI agent that would review a patient’s bill, find errors, and negotiate with the hospital or insurer. Per the company’s Y Combinator account, in under five months the tool helped sixty patients erase or reduce more than $300,000 in bills.

The problem upstream

Onuoha and Shehu decided the bigger leverage point was not the patient’s mailbox but the claim itself, before a payment goes out. Self-insured employers, who directly bear the cost of their workers’ medical claims, are described in the company’s own materials as losing more than $60 billion a year, by one estimate, and over $100 billion by another, to claims that should never have been paid.

The company’s case against the status quo: manual audits only sample high-dollar claims and miss the rest; legacy rule engines built decades ago cannot keep pace with changing codes and contracts; and the third-party administrators who process claims are paid to process them, not to catch errors. Avelis positions its models as a way to review every claim, not a sample, both before and after payment.

Two founders, one prior exit

Onuoha studied computer science and economics at Harvard, where he also co-founded BLK Capital Management, a student-run investment group. He worked as an associate product manager at Google starting in late 2020, covered at the time by DNB Stories Africa. GFT Ventures, an investor, describes him on its blog as a Kleiner Perkins Fellow and a repeat, venture-backed founder.

Before Avelis, Onuoha and Shehu built Zuvy, a Lagos-based startup that financed unpaid invoices for small businesses in Nigeria. Techpoint Africa reported in 2023 that Zuvy had raised $4.5 million, split between $4 million in debt and $580,000 in equity, led by TLG Capital. Shehu, per Y Combinator’s summary of the founders, had built healthcare data platforms for the Nigerian government serving more than 20 million people, and had worked as a product engineer at the open banking startup Mono.

In June 2025, TechCabal and Techpoint Africa both reported that BAS Group, a Nigerian financial services company, had acquired a majority stake in Zuvy. Onuoha and Shehu stepped back from day to day operations, retaining minority stakes, and turned to Avelis Health full time.

From consumer app to Y Combinator

Avelis Health joined Y Combinator’s Summer 2025 batch and, on June 25, 2025, closed the standard $500,000 pre-seed that comes with that acceptance, according to Yahoo Finance, UrbanGeekz, Preqin and PitchBook. The company used the funding to launch Payment Integrity, its claims-auditing product, retiring the original consumer tool as the main focus.

A second, larger round followed. PitchBook records an early stage VC deal closing September 11, 2025. Tekedia Capital, a Nigeria-founded venture syndicate, publicly welcomed Avelis Health to its portfolio that month and again in a November post describing its participation in the company’s “fundraising round.” GFT Ventures wrote in a Q1 2026 investor update that it had joined the seed round alongside Y Combinator, Rebel Fund and a fund it named Maiora Ventures. PitchBook separately lists ZAKA VC among the company’s six investors. None of these sources disclose the round’s size.

GFT Ventures also said the company’s first hire was a data analyst previously at Optum, UnitedHealth Group’s claims and analytics arm, and a research consultant previously in payment integrity at UnitedHealth itself.

What is proven, and what is still claimed

Operations track. Avelis Health has no FDA record, clinical trial, or NIH or NSF award, expected for a claims-auditing software company rather than a device or therapeutic maker. The evidence instead sits in funding records, an accelerator batch, and a named domain-expert hire, laid out below.

Read plainly: the money that has come in is independently documented, but the numbers Avelis Health uses to describe its own product shift depending on which document you read, and the company has not named a client. That is normal for a startup months out of an accelerator, but the savings and impact figures on the website remain claims, not audited results.

What to watch

  • Whether Avelis Health files a Form D for either round, and what it discloses about size and investor count.
  • A named pilot customer, self-insured employer, TPA or health plan.
  • Whether the company settles its own savings figure between the 2-7%, 3-7% and 8-10% versions in circulation.
  • Progress from the Optum and UnitedHealth-experienced hire GFT Ventures described.

In their words

“If I was struggling with this system, I knew millions of other Americans were facing the same problem without the resources to fight back. The medical billing system is broken, 100 million Americans have medical debt, and 50-80% of bills have errors in them.”

Angel Onuoha, CEO, in an email to AFROTECH, reported by Yahoo Finance, June 2025 · Interview

“With the Y Combinator funding, we launched Payment Integrity for self-insured employers. We audit 100% of claims in real time, catch billing errors before they pay, and save companies 8-10% on their annual health plan spend with zero impact to employee benefits.”

Angel Onuoha, CEO, to AFROTECH, reported by Yahoo Finance, June 2025 · Interview

“In the US, medical billing is an extremely complex system. Oftentimes, when you go to the hospital, you’re massively overcharged, and your bills are full of errors. I wanted to find a way to help patients push back against those bills and give them the tools to actually pay fair prices for the care they receive.”

Angel Onuoha, CEO, to TechCabal, June 2025 · Interview

“We take great pride in Zuvy’s accomplishments and the positive impact we’ve created for thousands of Nigerian enterprises.”

Angel Onuoha, in a statement to Techpoint Africa, June 2025 · Interview

“A lot of the infrastructure is ready. It is just for us to scale it with our capital and institutional relationships in the market. A lot of the repayments we will be receiving will now be channeled through the Zuvy platform.”

Abdulateef Hussein, CEO and founder, BAS Group, to TechCabal, June 2025 · Interview

“We were impressed by the founding team’s unique combination of proven entrepreneurial execution and deep insider domain expertise.”

GFT Ventures, Q1 2026 investor update · Investor
