Beacon Health

AI agents built to close quality gaps, handle risk adjustment and run prior authorizations inside a primary care practice’s own EHR. A Y Combinator Winter 2026 company with one named practice partner, one unnamed enterprise customer, and a public funding record thinner than its own claims.

Six months inside one practice

Before Beacon Health was a company, Mark Pothen spent six months working inside Kaaya Healthcare, a primary care practice in Framingham, Massachusetts run by Karthik Ravindran, MD, an internal medicine physician and associate professor at Tufts University School of Medicine. Pothen owned day to day operations there and layered AI on top of the workflows he found: quality measure tracking, risk adjustment coding, patient outreach, the paperwork that sits behind a value based care contract.

Ravindran later shows up on Beacon’s own Y Combinator launch post as the company’s first customer and CMO. A photo caption on that post reads, in the company’s words, that it was taken “in the practice with our first customer and CMO Karthik.” Kaaya Healthcare’s own website confirms Ravindran and his practice are real and describes his background in detail, but it makes no mention of Beacon Health.

The problem

Primary care is, in the company’s own framing, “the primary source of care for over 200M Americans,” but physicians do not have the bandwidth to manage their patient panels. Practices that take on risk based, value based contracts inherit a long list of obligations at once: more than a dozen quality measures, risk adjustment documentation, after hours patient needs, and EHRs and vendor tools that do not talk to each other. Beacon’s bet is that the failure is operational, not clinical, and that AI agents working inside the EHR, the way a staff member would, can close that gap end to end rather than hand a physician another dashboard.

Two founders, no prior exit

Mark Pothen, the CEO, holds a mechanical engineering degree from the New Jersey Institute of Technology. Before Beacon he worked in product and go to market roles at a string of early stage companies, including Cape, Steadywell and PayAngel, and a stint as a Product Executive in Residence, according to his own work history profile. Obinna Akahara, the CTO, studied physics at the University of Texas at Austin, worked as a software engineer at LinkedIn and at Conversion, and was a Z Fellows fellow in 2023. Both list a 2025 stretch at Kaaya Healthcare, the practice where the idea took shape.

A third party review of the Y Combinator Winter 2026 batch, published on a site called The YC Tier List, summed up the pair plainly: it called the underlying problem “a credible problem in value-based care administration” but noted that “neither has deep healthcare IT experience or a prior exit, and the CTO’s background is relatively junior (1.5 years at LinkedIn, 6 months at Conversion.ai).”

From embed to Y Combinator

Beacon Health joined Y Combinator’s Winter 2026 batch. By the time of its Launch YC post, the company said it had gone live with a second commercial relationship: “We just went live with an independent physician association supporting 40,000 patients.” The company has not named that IPA. At a value based care industry event in September 2025, ahead of YC, Pothen pitched the product directly to prospective clients: “Save money with our billing, front office, and prior auth workflows and unlock up to $250k per PCP from your Value Based Contracts.”

In a September 2025 podcast interview recorded before the YC batch, Pothen described the sales motion as relationship driven and said the company had recently closed an enterprise contract on what he called “sales cycle from 8 months to like maybe 2 weeks.” In the same conversation he said he splits his time between Boston and New York and lives in New York, a detail that sits awkwardly next to the San Francisco address usually attached to the company. Beacon’s own hiring page, live as of this writing, describes the team as based in New York, not San Francisco.

What is proven, and what is still claimed

Read plainly: Beacon has a credible founding story, one named clinical partner and one unnamed larger customer, but the paper trail behind both the funding and the address is thin and, in places, contradictory. Nothing here says the company is not real or not working. It says the public record has not caught up to the pitch yet.

What to watch

• Whether Beacon names the independent physician association it says covers 40,000 patients.
• A Form D filed directly by Beacon Health itself, rather than through a third party SAFE vehicle, for a larger round.
• Revenue growth beyond the two relationships disclosed so far, the point the YC Tier List review flagged as the thing worth watching.
• Whether the company settles on San Francisco or New York as its home base.
