Caelum Health

A Y Combinator company that pitched software as a replacement for irritable bowel syndrome drugs, then shipped a diet coaching app. Y Combinator’s own directory now marks it inactive, and the domain it once used belongs to someone else.

The thread that asked the hard question

On April 25, 2018 the founders posted their launch thread on Hacker News, describing Caelum as a digital therapeutic for stomach problems. It drew 56 points and 43 comments. Most were about price. Two were not.

One commenter walked through Ohio’s dietetics statute, quoted the line that “only licensed dietitians can practice dietetics,” and asked how an app that assessed nutritional needs and counseled patients could do that with no licensed dietitian in the loop. Another pointed at the company’s own words: calling the product a digital therapeutic for a named disease, that commenter argued, put it inside the definition of a medical device.

Both questions got answers. Neither got an FDA submission, a registered trial or a published paper. Eight years later, that is still the shape of the record.

The problem was real

Irritable bowel syndrome is common and stubborn. A 2024 review in Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology puts pooled worldwide prevalence at 4.1 percent under Rome IV criteria and describes quality of life losses comparable to diabetes and end stage renal disease. Caelum’s launch post used a wider figure, saying IBS “affects 15-20% of people.”

The behavioral case is strong on its own terms. A Rome Foundation Working Team Report published in Gastroenterology in 2022 groups five classes of brain gut behavior therapy and records more than 30 randomized controlled trials behind cognitive behavioral therapy for IBS, plus meta analysis support for gut directed hypnotherapy. A 2016 Monash University trial found hypnotherapy and the low FODMAP diet produced similar symptom relief, with hypnotherapy better on anxiety and depression scores.

That evidence belongs to the therapies. It does not transfer to a company by association, and Caelum never generated any of its own.

A brother and a sister

Lauren Kelley-Chew took a medical degree at the University of Pennsylvania after studying human biology and applied mathematics at Stanford, with earlier stops in private equity at Health Evolution Partners and Francisco Partners. Her brother Luke came from technology and business school. Crunchbase files the company under its Women Founded tag.

The pitch: the best IBS treatments are diet and lifestyle change, they work in trials, and almost nobody can execute them without continuous expert guidance most patients cannot afford. The app was the guidance, and a coach reachable by message was the core of it.

What was promised, and what was sold

At Y Combinator’s Summer 2017 Demo Day, TechCrunch summarized the pitch under the heading “Replace prescription drugs with software.” The company’s directory one liner said it treated “diseases where drugs don’t work.” Its long description called the product “the first clinically-proven digital treatment for digestive health and IBS.”

What shipped was narrower. The May 2018 homepage read “Caelum Health | Medicine Made Simple.” By April 2019 it read “Caelum Health | Diet Coaching That Fits Into Your Life,” promising coaching “for significantly less money than traditional dietitians.” The disease claim had become a convenience claim.

Then the captures stop mattering. From mid 2020 the domain served a Persian language marketing blog. By September 2023 it served a Chinese electronic materials manufacturer. Apple’s lookup service returns nothing for the iOS app identifier. As of September 24, 2026 the hostname does not resolve.

What is proven, and what is still claimed

Operations track. Caelum Health has no FDA record, no registered trial and no indexed publication. Everything below that is not a negative finding comes from company statements, one Demo Day write up, startup databases and the Internet Archive.
EvidenceWhat the record showsSource type
FDA clearanceNo 510(k), De Novo or premarket approval on record. The founders said in April 2018 that the product had not been subject to FDA regulation. Not found
Registered trialsNo study on ClinicalTrials.gov names the company or the product. The April 2018 launch post said a clinical trial would start soon. None appears. Not found
Peer reviewed papersNo PubMed record naming Caelum Health or its product. Not found
“First clinically-proven digital treatment”The company description used this phrase. No trial, publication or regulatory submission supports it.Claim without record
Demo Day claims, August 2017TechCrunch reported the company saying its treatments were three times more effective than prescription drugs and that it had pilots with seven of the ten largest health systems. No health system was ever named, and no later report confirms one.Unverified claim
Therapy actually deliveredThe shipped product guided patients through the low FODMAP diet with human coaches. Nothing in the record shows Caelum delivering gut directed hypnotherapy or GI focused cognitive behavioral therapy, the two brain gut therapies with the deepest trial base. Not found
Clinician licensureThe 2018 thread raised state dietetics licensing and the medical device definition. The founders said lawyers had reviewed it. No licensure arrangement was ever described publicly.Company-stated
Evidence for the therapy classRome Foundation Working Team Report, Gastroenterology 2022: more than 30 randomized trials support GI focused CBT in IBS, and meta analyses support gut directed hypnotherapy. A 2025 meta analysis of 12 studies in 1158 patients found it “may improve global symptoms of IBS.”Peer reviewed

Read plainly: Caelum promised a clinically proven replacement for IBS drugs and delivered a diet coaching subscription. Two competitors did the slow thing instead. Mahana licensed a protocol developed over roughly 15 years at King’s College London and leaned on a 558 person randomized trial. metaMe put a registered trial on its 510(k). Both cleared the FDA within about 18 months of each other. Caelum reached the market years earlier and finished behind both on the only ledger that counts.

What to watch

  • Nothing from the company. No active website, no app listing, no SEC filing, no announcement since 2018.
  • Whether the founders return to the category. Lauren Kelley-Chew went on to Verily Life Sciences, then Levels, then Intuitive.
  • The cleared comparators, which now carry the evidentiary burden Caelum described but never took on.
  • Any new entrant using the phrase “replacing drugs with software” for a disorder of gut brain interaction. That claim is testable, and the test is a trial.

In their words

“Replacing drugs with software. We use behavioral medicine, delivered digitally, to treat diseases where drugs don’t work.”
