Home care & Medicaid access · Paid family caregiving
CareOasis
A Y Combinator backed platform that walks family caregivers in Ohio through Medicaid enrollment so they can get paid to care for a parent or spouse at home. It has not expanded past Ohio, and the public record around it is thin.
The pitch
CareOasis’s own tagline is blunt: “Get Paid for Family Caregiving.” The company’s homepage puts it the same way to the person it is trying to reach: “CareOasis helps Ohio families turn home caregiving into a supported, paid role. Secure your loved one’s comfort while securing your financial future.”
The product is not a device or a drug. It is a guided path through Medicaid paperwork. A family fills out an online eligibility form, CareOasis walks them through enrollment in the right Ohio Medicaid waiver, arranges the training a caregiver needs to qualify, and then, once someone is enrolled, handles billing and payment so the caregiver gets a regular paycheck rather than chasing reimbursement themselves.
The company quotes two compensation paths on its site: a stipend of up to $2,100 a month, tax free, for a live in caregiver, or $17 to $20 an hour for caregivers providing daily support. Both figures are company stated, not drawn from a public rate schedule.
The problem
The case CareOasis makes for itself leans on figures it attributes to AARP and its own estimates: 53 million U.S. adults are caregivers, an economic value of unpaid care it puts at $600 billion, and out of pocket costs it puts at $7,200 a year for a typical caregiver. Its state guides separately cite a lower, sourced figure: “In the United States, 38 million people take on this role (AARP 2021).”
The underlying mechanism is real and well documented in public programs, even if CareOasis’s own numbers are unsourced. States run Medicaid Home and Community Based Services waivers, and some of them, including Ohio’s PASSPORT and MyCare Ohio waivers, allow a family member to be paid as a caregiver through arrangements such as Structured Family Caregiving. CareOasis’s Ohio guide names PASSPORT, MyCare Ohio, the Home Care Waiver, the Individual Options Waiver, and several others, and links its own service to enrollment in PASSPORT or MyCare specifically.
The catch is that these are state by state programs with their own eligibility rules, and CareOasis has so far only built out one state. Its guides for Florida, New York, and Delaware describe each state’s own waiver programs in detail, then end the same way: “We currently help families in Ohio get paid to care for their loved ones, and we’re working on expanding to more states.”
Founders
CareOasis was started by Anuhya Vajapey and Juan M Ochoa Ortiz. Y Combinator’s company page describes Vajapey’s background as “ML in Healthcare, strategy at McKinsey, product at F5. Currently building in senior care space.” Prospeo, a contact data provider, lists her as CareOasis’s co-founder and CEO.
Ochoa Ortiz came to CareOasis after a first startup. Y Combinator describes him as “Founder and CTO at Casehopper. Previously at data science and software roles at Microsoft Bing, and Meta. Background building information extraction systems with language models.” Casehopper, also a Y Combinator company, built an AI drafting tool for immigration lawyers. CB Insights describes the problem it targeted: “The task of drafting and revising legal documents demands significant time, effort, and research. Immigration lawyers are often juggling multiple cases, all the while striving to maintain speed and accuracy.” CB Insights lists Casehopper as founded in 2023, based in Dover, Delaware, and having raised $500,000 in a convertible note from Y Combinator. No SEC Form D appears for Casehopper, and no independent reporting on Casehopper's funding was found beyond that CB Insights entry.
A Delaware company running an Ohio business
CareOasis’s own company record on file lists Dover, Delaware, the standard registered agent city for Delaware incorporation, as its address. Nothing found in this research shows a CareOasis office or operation in Delaware. Every independent listing checked, including its LinkedIn company page, its PitchBook profile, and Prospeo, gives an Ohio address instead. LinkedIn lists “Cincinnati, OH” as headquarters with 460 followers and 2 to 10 employees. PitchBook lists a Liberty Township, Ohio address. The company’s own Delaware guide even tells a Delaware reader plainly that the service is not available there yet.
The company appears to be operating, in a small way. Its LinkedIn page posted a hiring notice: “We're #hiring a new PRN RN Care Coordinator in Cincinnati Metropolitan Area. Apply today or share this post with your network.” A job listing for that role, Care Coordinator (part-time), was found through a hiring platform, though the listing itself had since been taken down.
What is proven, and what is still claimed
| Evidence | What the record shows | Source type |
|---|---|---|
| SEC Form D | No filing found under “CareOasis,” “Care Oasis,” or “Casehopper” in SEC EDGAR company search or full text search, checked September 2026. | Not found |
| FDA, NIH, NSF, PubMed | No records under the company name. Expected, since this is a Medicaid enrollment service, not a medical device, drug, or research program. | Not found |
| NPI registry | No organizational NPI record found for CareOasis or Care Oasis in the NPPES NPI Registry. | Not found |
| Total funding raised | PitchBook reports $500K raised, with SBXi and Y Combinator as investors and an Early Stage VC deal dated Sep 18, 2023. Prospeo, a separate data provider, lists CareOasis’s total funding field as “No funding.” | Sources disagree |
| Headquarters | Company record lists Dover, Delaware. LinkedIn, PitchBook, and Prospeo all give an Ohio address, Cincinnati or Liberty Township, instead, and the company’s own Delaware guide says CareOasis is not available in Delaware. | Differs from company record |
| Service area | Ohio only, all 88 counties, per the company’s own homepage. State guides exist for Florida, New York, and Delaware, but each ends by saying CareOasis is not there yet. | Company-stated |
| Team size | PitchBook lists 3 employees. LinkedIn and Prospeo both list 2 to 10 employees. | Third party data |
| Hiring activity | LinkedIn company page posted a hiring notice for a PRN RN Care Coordinator in the Cincinnati Metropolitan Area, consistent with an active, small Ohio operation. | Third party data |
Read plainly: there is no regulatory or SEC record for CareOasis at all, and the data that does exist, mostly from company aggregator sites rather than journalism, does not agree with itself on how much money the company has raised or, more basically, where it is. What is consistent across sources is that CareOasis is small, is based in Ohio, and only serves Ohio.
What to watch
- Whether CareOasis expands beyond Ohio, and to which state first. Its own guides for Florida, New York, and Delaware suggest those are candidates.
- Whether a Form D or any other SEC filing appears under the company’s name, which would settle the funding question one way or the other.
- Whether independent reporting on the company appears. None was found as of this research.
- Whether the company becomes an enrolled Medicaid provider or agency of record in its own name, rather than only an enrollment guide.
