Healthcare IT & AI · Prior authorization
Fairway Health
An AI co-pilot that read a patient’s medical record and told a health insurer whether a treatment met its own coverage criteria. Y Combinator backed the three person team in 2022, and in May 2024 TurningPoint Healthcare Solutions bought the company for a price neither side has disclosed.
A 70 page fax
Before a patient can get an MRI, a specialty drug, or a surgery, a physician’s office often has to prove to the insurer that the treatment is medically necessary. The proof usually arrives as a fax: a scanned bundle of chart notes, lab results, and imaging reports that can run past 100 pages, sent to a reviewer who has to find the handful of facts that answer one question, does this patient meet the plan’s criteria.
Fairway Health built software to read that fax. “We ingest patient documents + criteria from health insurance plans and use LLMs to output an approval/denial decision with justification based on an evaluation of each sub-criteria,” the founders wrote in their Y Combinator launch post. The tool also highlighted the passage in the record that supported each part of the decision, so a human reviewer could check the model’s work rather than start from page one.
The problem
The company described prior authorization as a process that can take two to fourteen days on average, with some cases stretching fifteen to thirty one days, and it cited an industry wide estimate of $36 billion a year in administrative cost tied to the process. Those figures come from Fairway Health’s own launch materials rather than from an independent study cited in the source, so they should be read as the company’s framing of the problem it set out to solve, not as a verified statistic.
“Patient documents sent to health insurance are a mess and can be a 70-100+ page fax,” the founders wrote, adding that insurers “have to allocate more headcount to try and manually check these documents against their medical necessity criteria, costing them millions each year.” The pitch was speed on both sides: faster answers for patients waiting on care, and lower review cost for the plans paying staff to read the fax by hand.
Founders
Moses Im, CEO, was an MD candidate at Thomas Jefferson Medical School, where he also worked as a clinical researcher comparing patient outcomes between surgical and transcatheter aortic valve replacement. Before medical school he did molecular biology research at Princeton on HIF-1α as a possible therapeutic target for Parkinson’s disease and on the role of HIF-1α in early stage development of aviary lungs. He holds a bachelor’s degree in molecular biology from Princeton.
Grace Wang, CTO, had worked at Asana on authentication and authorization and at AWS on IoT device data monitoring. Before that she was at MDClone, building packages to analyze hundreds of thousands of data points on attributes such as patient remission, and she had done earlier machine learning research in computer vision, detecting disease from retinal OCT scans, and in natural language processing, optimizing pretrained language models such as GPT.
Joseph Chen, CPO, had research experience at DeepMind, Columbia, and Synbio Technologies, including work fabricating a neurosurgical tracking sensor and predicting antibody heavy and light chain pairing within a next generation sequencing library. He was also a software engineer at PillPack, where he built a service that checks whether a user’s prescriptions are safe to take given their health profile.
The acquisition
On May 14, 2024, TurningPoint Healthcare Solutions, a Lake Mary, Florida company that manages specialty condition programs for health plans in cardiology, musculoskeletal care, wound care, ENT, sleep and other conditions across all 50 states, announced it had bought Fairway Health. The release put TurningPoint’s scope at nearly $4 billion in healthcare costs overseen today, and said Fairway’s large language model tools would be deployed across that book of business. Neither company disclosed the purchase price or terms.
“The Fairway Health acquisition is a significant milestone for TurningPoint in our commitment to drive innovation and maximize value across the healthcare continuum,” said CEO Eric Pezzi. “The burdens and friction providers face during the prior authorization process are many, and we believe that the Fairway Health acquisitions will define new ways to collaborate with providers.”
Moses Im stayed on at TurningPoint after the deal. More than a year later, in a comment on a LinkedIn post about Pezzi’s retirement, Im wrote that Pezzi had inspired him “to join him in his journey at TurningPoint” and that he was “excited to see how I can continue his legacy.” No public source found in this research describes what became of co-founders Grace Wang or Joseph Chen after the acquisition.
What is proven, and what is still claimed
| Evidence | What the record shows | Source type |
|---|---|---|
| The acquisition itself | Announced May 14, 2024 by TurningPoint via press release; logged independently by the deal databases PrivSource and Crunchbase, and reported by Yahoo Finance via GlobalData. | Independent |
| Deal price and terms | Not disclosed by either party. GlobalData’s Yahoo Finance writeup calls it an acquisition “for an undisclosed amount.” | Not found |
| Founding team and roles | Moses Im (CEO), Grace Wang (CTO), Joseph Chen (CPO), listed consistently across the Y Combinator company page and the TurningPoint acquisition release. | YC data |
| Legal entity name | Crunchbase lists Fairway Health’s legal name as SpeakMosaic, Inc. No SEC filing under “SpeakMosaic” or “Fairway Health” was found in an EDGAR company search run Sep 25, 2026, so this name has not been corroborated by a federal filing. | Unverified |
| Funding history | Tracxn lists total funding of $500,000 in one round in 2023, an amount that matches Y Combinator’s standard batch investment rather than a separately reported round. Crunchbase lists the last funding type as Pre-Seed with no amount. No SEC Form D was found for the company or for SpeakMosaic, Inc. | Unverified |
| FDA, trial, NIH and peer reviewed records | None found. Fairway Health sold decision support software to insurers rather than a medical device, so the absence of FDA and clinical trial records is expected, not a gap in coverage or safety evidence. | Not applicable |
| Named payer customers | None named in any source found. The launch post asked readers connected to health insurers to reach out, which suggests the company had not yet locked in insurer customers at its 2023 YC launch. | Not found |
| Moses Im’s role after the deal | His LinkedIn profile is headed “Moses Im - TurningPoint Healthcare Solutions” and a 2026 comment on that profile describes him continuing at the company after CEO Eric Pezzi’s retirement. |
Read plainly: the acquisition is well documented from multiple independent angles, but almost everything around it, the price, the size of any prior funding, and what happened to two of the three founders, is either undisclosed or unverifiable in the public record. The strongest evidence is that TurningPoint bought the company and kept its CEO.
What to watch
- Whether TurningPoint ever discloses what it paid for Fairway Health, or how the technology performs inside its prior authorization workflow.
- Whether an SEC Form D or any other federal filing ever surfaces for Fairway Health, Inc. or SpeakMosaic, Inc.
- Public confirmation of what Grace Wang and Joseph Chen did after the acquisition.
- Any named health plan that goes on record using the Fairway derived AI tools inside TurningPoint’s condition management programs.
