FinalDose
A one month old London biotech says it has built a single drug molecule that can be reprogrammed to find and kill any cell carrying a chosen DNA sequence, starting with cancer. The claim is enormous. The public record so far is a Y Combinator batch, a company house filing, and no published data.
A drug with a slot for the disease
FinalDose describes its idea in one sentence on its Y Combinator page: a single smart drug molecule that you can insert any diseased genetic code into, and it can search and destroy cells upon DNA recognition. The company says this unlocks 80 percent of undruggable targets, and that it is starting with all cancers.
The mechanism, as the founders describe it in their Launch YC post: they started with a DNA sensing protein that changes shape when it finds its target sequence, then turned that structural change into what they call a kill switch. The molecule scans the genome, and when it finds a hardcoded target sequence, the structural change triggers the cell's death. Swap the guide sequence and, in their telling, you have a new drug for a new disease. "We went straight for the DNA," the team wrote in the post.
The problem they are pointing at
The framing is a real one in drug discovery. Most modern drugs are built to bind a protein, and a large share of disease drivers, the company puts the figure at 75 to 85 percent, have no protein that small molecules or antibodies can reach. Cancers driven by MYC, TP53 and APC are the examples FinalDose names. All three are mutations that have frustrated protein directed drug discovery for decades precisely because the proteins involved lack a pocket a drug can grip.
Going after the DNA instead of the protein is not a new idea. Gene editing, antisense oligonucleotides and experimental DNA origami devices have all tried some version of it. A 2024 paper described a DNA robotic switch that opens inside a tumor and releases death receptor ligands, killing the cell. Writing about that work, science blogger Steven Novella noted it was tested only in mice, calling it "a proof of concept in an animal model, so we are still years away from a human treatment." That project has no connection to FinalDose. It shows the class of technology FinalDose describes, DNA triggered cell killing, is an active but still early academic pursuit, not an established therapeutic category.
Three Oxford PhDs
FinalDose's three founders all trained at Oxford. Jeff Liu, the CEO, holds a PhD in Oncology and Cancer Biology from Oxford, earned between 2017 and 2021, after a bioengineering degree and a stem cell biology master's at the University of Southern California. Before FinalDose, professional networking site RocketReach lists him as co-founder and CTO of Vivid Dx, an Oxford based sepsis diagnostics company, a role he has held since 2022. FinalDose's own materials describe Vivid Dx as a company Liu built that "solved a multi-decade bottleneck in sepsis diagnostics" and say it raised 15 million dollars in venture backing.
Li-Yao Huang, the CSO, holds a DPhil in Biochemistry from Oxford and spent five years as a postdoctoral researcher at the MRC Weatherall Institute of Molecular Medicine, where FinalDose says he led CRISPR screening work on BRCA1 deficient cancers and PARP inhibitor resistance. Steven Lin, listed on Companies House by his full name Shang-Kuan Lin, is the CTO. His own website says his Oxford doctorate, completed in 2018, was in Genomic Medicine and Statistics, with a research focus on genetic susceptibility to infectious disease in England and on coevolution models of hepatitis B virus drug resistance. FinalDose's bio for him broadens that to "genetic targets that convey drug resistance in viruses" generally and credits him with leading a UK Biobank analysis of genetic susceptibility to infection during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic.
A company that is a few weeks old
FinalDose Ltd was incorporated in the United Kingdom on 28 October 2025, according to Companies House. The registered office is a shared address on Ashley Road in Altrincham, Cheshire, a location used by many small UK companies for formation and correspondence purposes, not the London address the company gives publicly. The only officer on file is Shang-Kuan Lin. Neither Jeff Liu nor Li-Yao Huang appears as a director or person with significant control in the record checked for this profile. The company's statement of capital at incorporation was one pound, one ordinary share, which is standard for a UK startup at formation and says nothing about later fundraising. The only filing on record is the incorporation document itself.
The company joined Y Combinator's Spring 2026 batch, also labeled P26 in YC's materials, and published its Launch YC post in May 2026. The Silicon Valley Post named it one of five standout bio and healthtech startups in that batch, and FinalDose calls itself the only deep tech biotech startup in the group.

Read plainly: FinalDose is an idea and a founding team, not yet a validated drug. The scientific concept it is describing, killing cells based on DNA recognition rather than a protein target, is a real and active area of research elsewhere, but nothing about FinalDose's own version of it, whether it works in a dish, in an animal, or at all, has been made public. The tagline promises the end of cancer. The record so far is a five week old company with one director on file and a batch spot at an accelerator.
What to watch
- Any published preclinical or in vivo data showing the kill switch mechanism working in a living system.
- A patent filing that would let outside scientists evaluate the chemistry behind the claim.
- Whether Li-Yao Huang or Jeff Liu are added as directors or persons with significant control at Companies House.
- A first Form D or a named funding round beyond the standard Y Combinator batch investment.
- How Vivid Dx's sepsis platform performs in the clinical validation work it says it is only now beginning.
