Galen AI
An AI-powered personal health companion built to unify clinical records and wearable data behind a single conversational assistant. Founded in San Francisco in 2025, it went through Y Combinator’s first spring batch and was acquired by Oura Health about a year later.
A back injury and a lot of ChatGPT
Viraj Mehta spent more than four years managing chronic low back conditions before he started a company about it. In the launch post he wrote for Y Combinator, he described the pattern: waiting weeks for a reply from his care team, getting little explanation for new diagnoses, and trying to keep track of overlapping conditions and medications on his own.
“I found myself turning to ChatGPT. A lot,” he wrote. He and his co-founder, Priyanka Shrestha, decided his experience was not an outlier. It was the norm for a healthcare system they described as overloaded and fragmented, where patients are largely left to navigate care by themselves.
Their answer was Galen, an app meant to sit between a person’s scattered medical history and the questions they actually have. Connect your records and your wearables, the pitch went, and get a conversational assistant that already knows your context instead of a generic search result.
Two Stanford engineers, one class project
Mehta and Shrestha met working on a class project at Stanford, where they both completed a BS and MS in computer science. Shrestha had started out pre-med and had done clinical and biocomputation research at Stanford SAIL, the Cleveland Clinic, and UCLA, and had worked as a software engineer at Roche. Mehta had worked as an engineer at Optiver and as a quantitative trader at IMC Trading before his own health experience pulled him toward healthcare. Together they had already built a mobile app for cancer patients with the Stanford Center for Biodesign before starting Galen.
The company launched out of Y Combinator’s Spring 2025 batch, YC’s first cohort run in the spring rather than the usual winter or summer cycle, under partner Dalton Caldwell. Business Insider named Galen AI one of ten AI agent startups worth watching from that Demo Day, describing it as a tool that “connects hundreds of healthcare records and fitness tracker data into information an AI agent can use to offer personalized health and wellness advice.”
What the product did
Galen connected to medical records through Apple HealthKit and the FHIR standard used across hospital systems, reaching, by the company’s account, more than 800 healthcare institutions across more than 12,000 locations in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada. It also synced with more than 20 wearable devices, including the Apple Watch, Fitbit, and Dexcom.
Once connected, the app generated summaries of a user’s medical history, surfaced patterns across labs and vitals, tried to explain new symptoms in the context of existing conditions, and answered questions about medication side effects and interactions. At launch and through most of its life as an independent company, Galen was described as a consumer app in beta testing, reachable through a waitlist and a private beta by email, ahead of a planned App Store release.
No FDA clearance, PMA, registered clinical trial, or federal research grant tied to Galen AI or its founders turned up in the public records checked for this profile. That is consistent with a consumer wellness app rather than a regulated medical device.
The acquisition
On April 17, 2026, Oura announced it was acquiring Galen AI. The smart ring maker said it would bring on Galen’s technology and its team, framing the deal as part of a push to become a “connected health companion” rather than a wearable-only brand. The move followed Oura’s March 2026 acquisition of the gesture-recognition startup Doublepoint and the same-month launch of Oura’s first proprietary AI model, built for women’s health.

Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. Neither company has filed anything with the SEC that would put a number on the deal, and no later reporting found one either.

Read plainly: the founding story, the YC batch, the founders’ backgrounds, and the fact of the Oura acquisition are all independently confirmed. The scale figures for data integration come only from the company and the press that repeated them. Everything about clinical validation, user counts, and the price Oura paid is either absent from the record or explicitly withheld.
What to watch
- Whether Oura folds Galen’s record-integration layer into Oura Advisor, the near-term move several outlets expect.
- Whether the acquisition’s financial terms are ever disclosed, through a later filing or a future Oura fundraising document.
- What roles Viraj Mehta and Priyanka Shrestha take on inside Oura, which has not been stated publicly beyond “joining the team.”
