Kodda
A Monterrey startup that started out selling digital insurance in under 90 seconds, then rebuilt itself twice into a subscription app for healthy habits before Y Combinator's directory marked it inactive.
Insurance in 90 seconds
Kodda did not start as a wellness app. When Startupeable added it to its Latin American startup directory, the description was pure insurtech. “En lugar de hacer 10 horas de trámites con corredores y compañías de seguros tradicionales, el usuario puede cubrirse en menos de 90 segundos a través de su plataforma,” the listing read: instead of ten hours of paperwork with brokers and traditional insurers, a user could get covered in under 90 seconds through the platform.
Descubre.vc, a Mexican startup directory run by YC alumnus Santiago Zavala, described the same company in similar terms: “Ofrece seguros digitales de contratación rápida (promocionan contratación en menos de 90 segundos) junto con programas preventivos para reducir riesgos asociados a sobrepeso, diabetes y enfermedades cardiovasculares.” Even at that early stage, the pitch mixed fast digital insurance with preventive wellness programs aimed at overweight, diabetes and cardiovascular risk, so the later pivot to pure wellness was less a reversal than a narrowing.
The problem it targeted
Kodda's own LinkedIn page states the case plainly: “3 de cada 4 adultos en México tienen sobrepeso u obesidad y las principales causas de muerte son por diabetes y problemas en el corazón,” meaning three of every four Mexican adults are overweight or obese, and diabetes and heart disease are leading causes of death. The company's argument was that both are preventable through balanced habits in diet, physical activity and mental health, and that most people abandon diets and routines that demand too much too fast.
“En Kodda creemos que los hábitos son la raíz del problema y buscamos incentivar a que las personas empiecen a crearlos de manera fácil para que sea sostenible en el largo plazo,” the same page says: Kodda believes habits are the root of the problem, and wants to make building them easy enough to stick.
Founder
Public aggregators agree on one name behind Kodda: Emilio Antún, listed by Tracxn as the company's founder and by his own LinkedIn title as co-founder and CEO of Kodda, YC Summer 2021. No independent interview, podcast or profile of Antún discussing Kodda's origin was found in this research, and no other named co-founder could be confirmed.
One naming trap is worth flagging directly. A separate, unrelated company also called Kodda, legally “Kodda Labs, Inc.,” is a Chicago software shop founded in 2019 with the tagline “Data to decisions. Faster.” and the domain kodda.io. It has no connection found to the Monterrey wellness company; the two simply share a name.
From insurance app to habit coach to studio marketplace
By the time Wayback Machine captures show a later version of kodda.com, the insurance pitch was gone. The homepage described Kodda as a guide, teacher, companion and motivator toward a healthy, sustainable and balanced lifestyle: “Kodda te guía, te enseña, te acompaña y te motiva para poder alcanzar un estilo de vida saludable, sostenible y equilibrada.” That version listed 8 coaches, 12 programs and more than 500 pieces of content, a habit tracker, weekly online mental health events, a discount marketplace and an early AI recommendation feature, sold as a subscription with a 14 day free trial.
The site's “Sobre nosotros” page framed the pivot as a philosophy: “En Kodda, creemos que la salud debe ser prioridad, pero desde todos los ángulos, comenzando por la salud mental y complementando con nutrición y movimiento,” meaning health should be a priority from every angle, starting with mental health and complemented by nutrition and movement. The coaches named on the site held real credentials: a clinical psychologist with a cognitive behavioral specialty from UDEM, a sports nutritionist and marathoner, a physician with sport science training, and several yoga and Pilates instructors.
A separate page, “+Studio,” shows Kodda had also built a directory of partner fitness studios around San Pedro Garza García and Monterrey: a lower body and Pilates studio, a barre and workout studio, an indoor cycling studio and a functional training gym, each with class bookings through the Kodda app. That put Kodda in a ClassPass style role alongside its coaching content, layering a local studio marketplace on top of the habit app.
What is proven, and what is still claimed
| Evidence | What the record shows | Source type |
|---|---|---|
| YC directory status | Y Combinator's company page lists Kodda as founded 2020, Summer 2021 batch, team size 7, status Inactive, primary partner Aaron Epstein. | YC data |
| SEC filings | SEC EDGAR company search for Form D filers named Kodda returns zero results. SEC EDGAR full text search across all filing types for the word Kodda also returns zero hits. | Not found |
| Team size | YC lists 7 people. Kodda's own LinkedIn company page self reports a company size band of 11 to 50 employees, headquartered in Santa María, Nuevo León. | Differs from YC data |
| Business model shift | Early directory listings (Startupeable, Descubre.vc, both circa 2021 to 2022) describe fast digital insurance plus preventive wellness. Later Wayback captures of kodda.com (dated 2024 by the archive) show a pure subscription wellness app with no insurance product mentioned. | Company-stated, changed over time |
| Funding total | Tracxn's public profile states Kodda “has raised $125K in funding” over 1 round dated Aug 31, 2021, then in the same profile lists a funding table with a conflicting figure of $1,720,066 for that same round. No Form D or other primary filing corroborates either number. | Aggregator figures disagree with each other |
| Revenue estimate | GetLatka estimates Kodda reached about $1.2M in annual revenue by December 2024, up from about $1M in June 2024, both labeled as estimates rather than reported figures. | Third party estimate |
| Clinical or regulatory record | No FDA filings, registered clinical trials, NIH awards, NSF awards or PubMed results were found for Kodda. As a wellness and coaching app rather than a medical device or diagnostic, that is expected rather than a gap in coverage. | Not applicable |
| Live website | As of September 2026, kodda.com fails to load over https: the TLS handshake returns an internal alert error rather than serving a page. Wayback Machine captures remain the only accessible record of the site's content. | Public record |
Read plainly: the public record confirms Kodda existed, went through Y Combinator, changed its product at least twice, and is now marked inactive with a broken website. What it does not confirm is how much money the company actually raised, who besides Emilio Antún ran it, or exactly when or why it stopped operating. The aggregator numbers for funding contradict themselves, and no SEC filing, news article about a shutdown or founder statement fills that gap.
What to watch
- Whether Emilio Antún or another Kodda founder has since started a new company, which would help date when Kodda actually wound down.
- Any Mexican corporate filing or press mention that would confirm or replace Tracxn's conflicting funding figures.
- Whether the partner studios named on the old “+Studio” page are still operating under a different booking system, which would help separate Kodda's shutdown from the fitness studios themselves.
In their words
