Lume

A banking app built only for nurses, with early access to earned pay, student loan refinancing help, and job data pulled from other nurses. Y Combinator backed it in 2020, and Vivian Health folded its technology in two years later.

End of shift, money in the account

A nurse clocks out after a twelve hour shift and, instead of waiting until payday, opens the Lume app and cashes out a slice of what she earned that day. That was the pitch. The company’s own site, archived by the Wayback Machine in October 2021, promised to “get paid early (you worked today, get paid today!)” with a “fee-free overdraft of up to $500,” no minimum balance, and no monthly fees.

By early 2022 the pitch had a name for the underlying account: a Lume checking account and debit card, deposits insured through a partner bank, Blue Ridge Bank, N.A., up to $250,000. The company called itself a technology platform “dedicated to helping healthcare professionals build wealth.”

The problem it named

Lume aimed at a workforce with a specific money problem. Nurses, and travel nurses especially, are paid on schedules that do not always match their bills, carry student debt from nursing school, and move between employers often enough that a normal bank relationship rarely gets a chance to build in perks. The company’s pitch bundled three answers into one app: early access to earned wages, help refinancing student loans, and access to pay and workplace data other nurses had already submitted, so a nurse considering a new job could see what the role actually paid before taking it.

Founders who had worked healthcare staffing

Christopher Chang and Shantanu Joshi founded Lume in 2019 and took it through Y Combinator’s Summer 2020 batch. Public detail on their earlier careers is thin. What they said about themselves, in the announcement of their next move, is that they had “previously run a healthcare staffing firm,” which they said gave them a head start understanding the customers, products and vision of the healthcare jobs marketplace Vivian Health.

Whether Lume raised outside money before or during the YC batch is not settled by any public filing. No Form D appears under Lume, Lume Technologies, Lume Holding, or uselume.com in SEC EDGAR’s full text search. Two commercial data providers, PitchBook and CB Insights, separately list a small seed round with Y Combinator and Esas Ventures among the investors, but they do not agree on the amount, and neither points to a primary filing or press release that confirms a number. The company’s registered corporate office, per PitchBook, was in San Francisco, which does not match the New York City location Y Combinator lists for the company.

Folded into a bigger platform

On September 14, 2022, Vivian Health, a healthcare jobs marketplace owned by IAC, announced it had reached an agreement to use Lume’s technology. Chang and Joshi joined Vivian to lead product and engineering work aimed at new financial products for the roughly 800,000 registered clinicians then using Vivian’s marketplace. Vivian’s Y Combinator page now lists Lume’s status as Inactive.

The deal was described as an acquisition of “use of” Lume’s technology rather than a purchase of the company outright, and the language in Vivian’s own materials stayed careful about what would and would not follow. Weeks after the announcement, a Vivian community manager fielding questions from nurses on the company’s own forum wrote that a planned card product was “still under development” and that “this won’t include any loan products,” a narrower promise than the on-demand pay and loan refinancing Lume had advertised on its own site months earlier.

What is proven, and what is still claimed

Operations track. Lume never appears in FDA, NIH, NSF, ClinicalTrials.gov or SEC Form D records under its own name, which is expected for a consumer banking app rather than a device or drug company. Its record is built from its own site, Y Combinator’s listing, one acquisition announcement, and two funding data aggregators that disagree with each other.

Read plainly: everything known about Lume comes from the company’s own site, Y Combinator’s directory, and Vivian Health’s acquisition announcement, which itself was reprinted by outlets that added no independent reporting. No government record and no SEC filing turns up under the company’s name. The two commercial data services that do list a seed round cannot agree on how much it raised, and even the acquiring company’s own support staff narrowed what the technology would actually deliver once it moved to Vivian.

What to watch

  • Whether Vivian Health, now folded into People Inc., ever launched the card product referenced in its 2022 support replies, or the loan and refinancing features Lume advertised before the deal.
  • Whether either founder discusses Lume’s funding history or its actual revenue in any future interview, which would settle the PitchBook and CB Insights discrepancy.
  • Any amended SEC filing or state banking record that would confirm how Lume structured its banking product through Blue Ridge Bank, N.A.
