Luminist Labs

A Y Combinator-backed diagnostic startup that set out to build a broad biochemical “fingerprint” for cancer screening, then narrowed to non-invasive testing for liver fibrosis and NASH before DiscernDx acquired it in 2020.

A fingerprint, not a single marker

Luminist Labs’ own website, archived by the Wayback Machine, opened with a challenge to the whole way cancer screening was done: “The current approach to cancer screening isn’t working.” The pitch continued in the same register: years spent chasing single biomarkers, a narrow focus that had produced few effective tests. “What if we can create a comprehensive ‘fingerprint’ of your overall biochemistry?” the site asked, promising that “a single, inexpensive test can provide information about many diseases.”

That framing, cancer screening built from a wide biochemical signature rather than one target, is a broader claim than the description now attached to the company. Y Combinator and later coverage of its 2020 acquisition describe Luminist as a liver disease diagnostic specifically, aimed at non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and liver fibrosis. Tracxn’s company profile still calls it a “developer of screening tests for cancer,” built on “a complete fingerprint of the patient’s biochemistry, which can then be used to make fast and accurate diagnoses.” Whether that shift from a general cancer platform to a liver-specific test happened by design or by the market steering the company toward its strongest data set is not addressed in any record found.

The problem it aimed at

By the time DiscernDx announced the acquisition, the target market had a name and a scale. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, or NAFLD, was described in the joint announcement as the most common form of chronic liver disease in the United States, affecting an estimated 100 million Americans, with more than 3 million patients carrying its most severe form, NASH. At that point there were no approved therapeutics in the United States for the condition, and more than 250 active clinical trials were underway, according to the release.

The diagnostic bottleneck sat upstream of any treatment question. The announcement called liver biopsy, still the diagnostic and prognostic gold standard, “a painful, costly and invasive option for patients,” and said there was a clear need for a scalable, non-invasive test to identify and manage NASH patients. That is the gap Luminist’s platform was built to fill: turning a blood-based biochemical signature into a stand-in for a needle in the liver.

Two founders, thin public trail

Public records name two co-founders. Storm Stillman is listed by Y Combinator as Luminist’s founder and CEO, and his later career is documented in more detail than the company he started. Before Luminist, according to a Happenstance profile, Stillman worked in clinical operations, including a senior pharmacy technician role and program and project management positions at Biorasi and Conduent, giving him hands-on exposure to clinical trial delivery before he built a diagnostics company. After Luminist, he moved into decentralized clinical trials, rising through program and operations roles at Curebase to become its CEO, a position Y Combinator also lists him as currently holding.

The second co-founder is harder to document. Tracxn names Will Olsen as Luminist’s co-founder and chief operating officer and credits him as a founder of two other companies, Engage Bio and Luminist itself, plus one angel investment. No independent profile or interview naming Olsen’s background was found in this research.

Y Combinator, a small raise, and an acquisition

Luminist went through Y Combinator’s Winter 2016 batch, based in Newark, California, according to YCDB’s archive of the company’s YC listing, dated July 25, 2016. Tracxn records a single funding round in 2016, a seed round it puts at a total of $120,000, and lists the company’s eventual outcome as “Acqui-Hired.” No Form D or other SEC filing under the name Luminist Labs was found in EDGAR searches, so that $120,000 figure rests on Tracxn’s aggregation alone and could not be independently confirmed.

On April 29, 2020, DiscernDx, a Palo Alto precision medicine company formed in 2017, announced it had acquired Luminist Labs. The deal was covered independently by GenomeWeb, 360Dx and Mergr in addition to the companies’ own release, all dating the announcement to the same day and all stating that deal terms were not disclosed. DiscernDx said it would fold Luminist’s sample and data set into its own multi-omics platform to build NASH-specific diagnostics. DiscernDx itself did not stay independent for long: CB Insights records that Naring Health, and with it DiscernDx, was acquired by Viome Life Sciences in November 2023, folding whatever remained of Luminist’s technology into a third company’s platform.

Read plainly: the commercial story here, a Y Combinator company that pivoted toward a real clinical need and sold itself into a larger precision-medicine platform, is well documented by trade press. The clinical story is not. No FDA clearance, no registered trial and no published paper for Luminist’s diagnostic was found anywhere in this research, and the deal that ended the company’s independent life came with no disclosed price.

What to watch

  • Whether any published validation of Luminist’s liver fibrosis or NASH test ever appeared under DiscernDx’s or Viome’s later branding.
  • Whether an amended or newly discovered SEC filing settles the $120,000 funding figure one way or the other.
  • Any record clarifying Will Olsen’s role and background, which remains undocumented outside a single aggregator profile.
  • Confirmation of Luminist’s founding year, which sources place as either 2014 or 2015.
