Sensible Biotechnologies
A platform that grows therapeutic mRNA inside engineered cells instead of making it in a tube. Five years in, the partner list is real, the peer reviewed data is not there yet, and the money only appeared on a public filing in September 2026.
The impurity you cannot quite wash out
Every dose of mRNA medicine on the market today begins in a tube, not in a cell. A DNA template, a polymerase, four nucleotides and a capping reagent go in. A few hours later the reaction is stopped and the product is cleaned up. The method is called in vitro transcription, and it is how the COVID vaccines were made.
It also makes something nobody ordered. The polymerase does not always stop where it should, and the strands it throws off fold back and pair with themselves. The result is double stranded RNA, which the innate immune system reads as a virus. Purification strips out most of it. Most is not always enough.
Sensible Biotechnologies wants to leave the tube behind. The pitch, from the company’s own launch post: “We are utilizing the processes in the living cells, which have been producing high-quality mRNA for millions of years.” Engineer the cell, let its native machinery transcribe and modify the message, then pull the product out already packaged.
Why the bottleneck is the factory, not the target
The company’s argument, repeated since 2021, is that mRNA medicine is not held back by ideas about what to encode. It is held back by what the current process can physically deliver. In vitro transcription needs proprietary enzymes and reagents, it does not scale to large reaction volumes, and long sequences are hard to make and harder to purify. Self amplifying mRNA, which would cut the dose needed for many therapies, runs straight into that wall.
The Biotech Blueprint newsletter put the risk plainly in November 2025: in vitro transcription is proven, familiar to regulators and embedded in existing supply networks. A new production base has to match it on release testing, batch after batch, before price or scale matters.
Two Slovaks and an Oxford bench
Miroslav Gasparek was born in December 1995, according to his Companies House director record. He grew up, as he told an investor podcast in 2024, in a village in the northwest of Slovakia. He studied bioengineering at Imperial College London and, by the company’s account, did research at Imperial, Caltech and Stanford before returning to Oxford. Marian Kupculak was born in June 1994 and took a doctorate at Oxford. His name sits on three Cell Reports papers between 2019 and 2023, all on DNA repair, none on mRNA.
They incorporated Sensible Biotechnologies s.r.o. in Bratislava on December 16, 2021, with share capital of EUR 5,000, wholly owned by the Delaware parent from day one. The UK company came fourteen months later. Forbes named both founders to its 30 Under 30 Europe science and healthcare list for 2024.
From a pre-seed to a partner with a factory
The company went through Y Combinator in the Summer 2021 batch. In April 2023 it announced a $4.2 million pre-seed led by BlueYard Capital, with Y Combinator, Amino Collective, Civilization Ventures, Recode Health Ventures and ZAKA alongside, plus angels including Florian Schuster and Jason C. Foster. The release noted that the round followed a strategic partnership with Ginkgo Bioworks announced days earlier.
Then came two years of partner news rather than product news. In June 2025 the company announced an NVIDIA initiative, claiming RNA folding simulations at more than 11,000 steps per second and design cycles cut from fifteen days to one. In July 2025 Sartorius Stedim Biotech signed a memorandum of understanding to industrialise the platform, aiming at clinical grade material by 2026. In September 2026 the money showed up on a filing.
What is proven, and what is still claimed
| Evidence | What the record shows | Source type |
|---|---|---|
| Platform data | No peer reviewed paper, preprint or published dataset on the platform was found in PubMed searches on Sep 22, 2026. The founders’ indexed papers predate the company and cover DNA repair and microbial consortia. | Not found |
| Capital on the record | Two Form D notices under CIK 0001964363: $1,829,000 sold of a $3,000,000 offering, filed Feb 21, 2023; and $13,518,941 sold of a $15,000,000 offering, filed Sep 2, 2026, first sale Aug 17, 2026, 15 investors. | Public record |
| Announced pre-seed | The April 2023 release announced $4.2 million. The Form D filed six weeks earlier reported $1,829,000 sold, and no amendment was ever filed. The full offering, had it closed, was still $1.2 million short of the announced figure. | Differs from filing |
| Cumulative total | In June 2025 the company said it had raised more than $13M. Forbes wrote that the founders had raised around $10 million. At that date the only Form D on file covered $1,829,000. | Claims differ |
| Slovak operating accounts | Sensible Biotechnologies s.r.o., filed for the year to Dec 31, 2025: revenue from services EUR 1,064,658, personnel costs EUR 396,945, profit after tax EUR 31,501, cash EUR 940,337, short term deferred income EUR 719,036. Filed as a small accounting entity. | Public record |
| UK entity | SENSIBLE BIOTECHNOLOGIES LIMITED, company 14628427, incorporated Jan 31, 2023. Registered office is an accountancy address in Altrincham, Cheshire. Micro company accounts for 2024, no registered charges, controlled by the Delaware parent. | Public record |
| Sartorius Stedim Biotech | Memorandum of understanding signed July 9, 2025. Sartorius says it has already provided equipment and consumables and that the collaboration aims to enable clinical grade production of cell based mRNA by 2026. An MoU is not a supply contract. | Partner-stated |
| NVIDIA computing | Company reports more than 11,000 simulation steps per second on DGX Cloud with H100 80 GB GPUs, and optimization cycles cut from 15 days to one. No third party has published a check on those numbers. | Company-stated |
| Ginkgo Bioworks | Described by the company in 2023 as a major co-development partnership. No corresponding Ginkgo announcement was located. | Company-stated |
| Customers | The 2023 launch post claimed 10 letters of intent from biotech companies and research groups. None has been named, then or since. | Company-stated |
Read plainly: the technical claim is unaudited and the customer list is empty, but the corporate record is sturdier than the headlines. A Slovak subsidiary billing over a million euros a year, turning a small profit and carrying EUR 719,036 of deferred income into 2026 is not a company that only writes press releases. What is missing is the published purity and immunogenicity data that would settle the science.
What to watch
- Clinical grade material out of the Sartorius work, and the release specification it is held to. The stated target year is 2026, which is now.
- A paper or preprint showing double stranded RNA content and immunogenicity against in vitro transcribed controls.
- A named customer or a signed supply agreement, rather than letters of intent.
- The Slovak accounts for the year to December 31, 2026, which will show what the August 2026 money bought.
- An amended Form D. The September 2026 offering still had $1,481,059 unsold at filing.
