Egress Health
AI agents built to chase down what dental practices are owed by insurance companies, starting with eligibility checks, claims and denials. Y Combinator now lists the company as acquired, though no source found in this research names a buyer or terms.
A practice that nearly missed payroll
The origin story Egress Health tells is small and specific. A family friend of the founders worked at a dental practice that could not keep billing staff in place. The office fell so far behind on insurance paperwork that it collected barely 70 percent of what it was owed, and at one point it nearly could not make payroll.
That is the problem Egress Health built to solve: not a shortage of dentistry, but a shortage of people willing and able to do the repetitive, rules-heavy work of getting insurers to pay what they owe.
The problem, in the company’s own numbers
Egress Health’s pitch rests on a figure it supplies itself: that healthcare providers will spend more than 160 billion dollars this year on revenue cycle work, the back office grind of eligibility checks, claim submission, payment posting and denial appeals, and that even well run clinics still do not collect everything they are owed. No independent industry estimate for that figure turned up in this research, so it is presented here as the company’s own framing of the market, not a verified statistic.
The product answers that gap with software rather than staff. Egress Health says its agents navigate insurance websites and dental practice management systems directly, doing the eligibility verification, claims scrubbing, payment posting and denial management that would otherwise fall to an administrator or a billing specialist. The company says its average customer eliminates one to two full time employees and collects 5 to 15 percent more revenue a month after switching on the product. That claim comes from Egress Health itself; no customer, clinic name, or third party audit corroborating it was found.
Two Harvard classmates, and a pivot
Alex Pedersen studied computer science at Harvard and worked as a software engineer at Microsoft before co-founding the company. Matthew Kiflu also attended Harvard College and, according to an independent trade blog published in September 2023, worked at the venture firm Pear VC before turning to startups himself. Kiflu’s own personal website describes him simply as the founder of Egress Health, a YC-backed revenue cycle automation startup.
The company did not begin as a dental billing tool. The same two founders started a product called Egress in 2023, described at the time as an AI layer for company data that let non-technical staff query a data warehouse in plain language and get back generated SQL, aimed at sales and marketing teams rather than dental clinics. That earlier product is the reason several data providers, including Tracxn, CB Insights and PitchBook, still list 2023 as the company’s founding year even though Y Combinator lists 2024. The 2024 date most likely marks the pivot into healthcare billing and the run-up to the Y Combinator batch, not a new legal entity.
From a late October launch to an unexplained acquisition
By the company’s own account, Egress Health went live with dental clinics in late October, and by the time of its Y Combinator launch post in March 2025 it said it had expanded to dozens of locations across the country and processed 14 million dollars in reimbursements. A Y Combinator job listing for a “Founding Operations” hire, posted around the same period, described the company as live at dozens of private clinics and groups and funded by a pre-seed round from Y Combinator and angel investors, with no dollar amount disclosed.
Sometime after that, without a press release, a named acquirer, or a filing located in this research, Y Combinator’s own company page updated Egress Health’s status to Acquired. PitchBook records a separate, unexplained event: an “Out of Business” deal type dated August 6, 2026. The two statuses are not obviously the same thing, and nothing found here reconciles them.
What is proven, and what is still claimed
| Evidence | What the record shows | Source type |
|---|---|---|
| Y Combinator status | Company profile lists Batch: Winter 2025, Primary Partner: Harj Taggar, and Status: Acquired. | Independent |
| Acquirer and deal terms | Not named on the Y Combinator listing, the company website, in press coverage, or in any filing found. No purchase price, closing date or successor entity was located. | Not found |
| Business status, per data providers | PitchBook logs an “Out of Business” deal type dated August 6, 2026. Tracxn and CB Insights show no such event and describe the company as an active, funded seed stage business as of their last updates. | Differs across sources |
| Customer traction | Company said in its March 2025 launch post that it had expanded to dozens of locations and processed 14 million dollars in reimbursements since a late October 2024 launch. No clinics, dental groups or DSOs are named anywhere. | Company-stated |
| Funding | No SEC Form D was found under Egress Health’s name in records.json or in a search of SEC EDGAR. The company describes a pre-seed round from Y Combinator and angels with no amount given. CB Insights separately lists a Convertible Note with 500 thousand dollars of a reported 1 million dollars total raised; Tracxn lists a 500 thousand dollar Seed round in 2025. The two accounts do not describe the same round structure. | Differs across sources |
| Federal grants and trials | Records.json returned no FDA 510(k), FDA PMA, ClinicalTrials.gov, NIH or NSF award, or PubMed entry that ties to this company. The NSF entries the automated match surfaced all belong to unrelated university health science centers. | Not found |
| Earlier product and founding date | An independent trade blog from September 2023 describes the same two founders running an AI data query tool called Egress, before the pivot to dental billing. That earlier date is why several data providers list 2023 as the founding year against Y Combinator’s 2024. | Independent |
Read plainly: what can be confirmed is that Egress Health built dental billing automation software, went through Y Combinator’s Winter 2025 batch, and now carries a Y Combinator status of Acquired. What is not confirmed, anywhere, is who acquired it, what it paid, when the deal closed, how much money Egress Health had actually raised, or which clinics used the product. The company’s own usage numbers, dozens of locations and 14 million dollars in reimbursements, have not been independently checked.
What to watch
- Whether an acquirer is ever named, by the buyer, by the founders, or in a public filing.
- Whether PitchBook’s “Out of Business” record and Y Combinator’s “Acquired” record get reconciled into one consistent account.
- Whether a Form D or other SEC filing ever appears for the 2024 to 2025 fundraising period.
- Named dental clinic or DSO customers, or any figure for reimbursements collected that comes from somewhere other than the company itself.
