Health Harbor

A Y Combinator backed startup whose AI agent calls health insurance companies on behalf of medical clinics, chasing down benefits, prior authorizations and claim status so office staff do not have to sit on hold.

The call nobody wants to make

A front desk employee dials a insurer's benefits line, punches through an automated menu, waits on hold, then reads a patient's plan details to a representative and writes down the answer by hand. Multiply that by every patient, every procedure code, every payor. Health Harbor's pitch is to replace that call with a machine that makes it instead.

The company's own description is plain about the job: “We use generative AI to call insurance on behalf of healthcare clinics.” The AI dials the payor, works through the interactive phone tree, waits on hold, and either talks to a live representative or, in a lighter mode called AI Copilot, hands the call to a staff member once a human picks up. Health Harbor says it covers medical, behavioral health and pharmacy benefits and can reach more than 6,000 insurers, including regional payors that have no online benefits lookup at all.

The problem it is chasing

Health Harbor's Y Combinator launch post put a number on the pain: more than 230,000 private practices in the US spend over 8 hours a week on the phone with insurance companies, which the founders add up to roughly 100 million wasted hours a year nationally. The result, in the company's telling, is slower billing cycles and patients who find out what they owe only after a procedure, when a surprise bill is much harder to contest.

Health Harbor's answer is to compress that cycle. The company says its standard turnaround is 24 hours against a typical 3 day turnaround from outsourced human call centers, and that its service costs more than 50% less than outsourcing the same calls to a staffing vendor.

Three founders and a hearing aid

Alan Liu, the CEO, has a technical background: five years of software experience in AI at Meta, where he worked on speaker identification for the Portal device, and at Nuro, where he worked on predicting objects hidden from a self driving vehicle's view. According to Y Combinator's company page, his path to Health Harbor ran through Yale, where he was building a hearing aid for himself and ran into the medical insurance system directly, an experience the company says shaped his interest in fixing the billing process for doctors and patients.

His co-founders came from different corners. Nathan Amin worked at an early stage startup, Liminal Sciences, that went public with Hyperfine, where he helped set product strategy and built the product himself as a designer and software engineer. Gloria Wu had planned multi year growth strategy at Bain and at the Gates Foundation. The three launched Health Harbor together in July 2023 as part of Y Combinator's Summer 2023 batch, after what the launch post describes as each of them personally dealing with insurance billing problems or hearing similar complaints from clinicians.

From a launch post to a paying product

Health Harbor's public debut was a Y Combinator Launch post on July 26, 2023, cross posted to LinkedIn by both Liu and Amin the next day. The pitch has stayed consistent since: an AI that calls insurance so clinics do not have to, sold through a HIPAA certified portal and API.

By the time GetLatka published a revenue estimate in September 2026, it put Health Harbor at about $440,000 in 2025 annual revenue, up from $0 at the 2023 launch, and counted 4 employees as of June 2024. Company size trackers disagree on the current headcount: LinkedIn lists the company at 2 to 10 employees, while Tracxn's tracker shows 16 as of July 2026. None of the three sources cites a primary document, and the company has not published its own staff count.

Read plainly: Health Harbor has a clear Y Combinator pedigree, a specific product description, and two named clinic customers who vouch for it in testimonials the company chose to publish. What it has not done is confirm a funding amount in a filing, publish a customer list beyond two names, or explain how its 99% accuracy figure is measured. The revenue and headcount numbers in circulation all come from third party estimators rather than the company itself.

What to watch

  • Whether Health Harbor or an investor discloses a funding round on the record, in a press release or an SEC filing.
  • Named customers beyond Kivo Health and Flair Health, and any published customer count.
  • A resolution of the employee count gap between LinkedIn, GetLatka and Tracxn.
  • Independent verification of the 99% accuracy claim or the daily call volume.
