NimbleRx
Nimble began as a licensed dispensing pharmacy with its own stores, shut them in early 2019, and rebuilt itself as the software layer sold to the independent pharmacies that do the dispensing. In May 2026 the healthcare adtech company Swoop bought it.
The line at the counter
Talha Sattar was standing in a pharmacy queue, picking up medication for a family member, when the question arrived. He had come from McKinsey, and he knew how many hands a prescription passes through. Why, he asked CNBC in 2017, is it quick and easy to order a car on demand but not a potentially life-saving medication?
“The key insight I had was that there was an information gap between the pharmacy, the physician and the consumer,” he said.
The first answer he built was a pharmacy. Nimble stocked drugs, hired pharmacists, and shipped. The second answer, the one that survived, was to stop dispensing entirely.
Who holds the license matters
Prescription delivery is not one regulated activity but at least three, under different law. Dispensing requires a pharmacy permit from every state board where the pharmacy operates, plus a DEA registration if controlled substances are involved. Carrying a filled prescription to a door is a courier function. Selling software on top of a pharmacy management system is neither, and that vendor is usually a business associate under HIPAA rather than a covered entity.
Nimble has held all three positions, and the record shows the transition. Federal NPI records list nine enumerations for Nimble Pharmacy Inc, the first on August 24, 2015, every one taxonomised as community or retail pharmacy. State permit numbers appear on six, covering California, Arizona, Texas and Washington, with registered addresses in nine metros from Menlo Park to Tukwila. Talha Sattar, and in most records the name Talha Waqar, is listed as owner or CEO.
That was the old company. Today Nimble is a vendor to pharmacies, and a House Judiciary Committee report of January 2026 groups it with Blink and Phil as a digital hub, not a dispenser. The distinction is not cosmetic. It decides which board can discipline whom, who answers for a controlled substance that goes missing, and who signs the business associate agreement. Nimble says it signs those with member pharmacies. Its own public Notice of Privacy Practices, effective January 1, 2021, is still written in covered entity language, referring to “our patients” and to a prescription “with us.” Nothing in the public record shows Nimble handling controlled substances itself today.
Closing the stores
Amazon bought PillPack in June 2018 for $753 million. Within months Nimble decided it could not win as a pharmacy. In early 2019 it shut its stores and cut about half its staff, 40 people, CNBC reported that May. The pitch shifted to the roughly 30,000 pharmacies without a chain name on the door: ordering, payment, signature capture and delivery coordination wired into whatever pharmacy system they already ran, no monthly fee, Nimble taking a cut of the transaction.
The category around it emptied out
Nimble's peers mostly did not make it. Medly filed Chapter 11 in December 2022, sold its assets to Walgreens, converted to Chapter 7 liquidation in April 2023, and in September 2024 the SEC charged three former executives with defrauding investors. NowRx shut down months after a $27 million crowdfunded Series C. Capsule and Alto each ran repeated layoffs.
Nimble sidestepped that by leaving the dispensing margin to someone else. It did not sidestep the pharmacy benefit managers. The House Judiciary report names NimbleRx in CVS internal analyses of competitive threats and describes CVS rewriting its provider manual to target independent pharmacies that worked with hubs, while, the committee says, never producing evidence of the fraud it cited.

Read plainly: the licensure history, the single Form D and the congressional record are checkable. The operating numbers are not. Every figure that would size the business, pharmacy count, patients, revenue, adherence, comes from the company or its acquirer, and the counts move in ways nobody has reconciled.
What to watch
- Whether the nine NPPES pharmacy enumerations are deactivated. They have sat active since the stores closed in 2019, and two were touched in September 2025.
- An amendment to the 2022 Form D, which would show whether the remaining $10.25 million was ever sold.
- Whether SwoopRx by Nimble changes the data posture. Manufacturer-funded messaging routed through pharmacy prescription data invites scrutiny that workflow software does not.
- The CVS provider manual dispute, which decides whether independent pharmacies can use hub software without risking network status.
- A reconciled pharmacy count. More than 7,000 storefronts and “hundreds of independent retail pharmacies” cannot both be current.
