Ankr Health

A Houston company that started by helping cancer patients track chemo side effects and has since rebuilt itself twice, first as a pharma-facing prediction platform, now as a set of generative AI agents meant to staff a clinic's front desk, scribing and billing.

A call from the ER

Three years before Ankr won its first pitch competition, Dr. Arpit Rao had a patient in his oncology clinic who seemed to have every advantage. She was sharp, she had gotten a second opinion, and as the CEO of her own company she had the means to travel for treatment. A few months into oral chemotherapy, an ER doctor called Rao with a panicked report: his patient had a life-threatening brain hemorrhage, a known but rare side effect of a blood pressure spike during treatment, buried in six pages of other potential reactions.

“I said if this smart, educated really supported and well-resourced person couldn’t do it, then there are 17 million cancer patients in this country who need our help, too,” Rao told the Houston Chronicle in 2021.

That call became the reason he spent, in the paper’s words, the next several years developing Ankr: a system meant to warn patients about side effects before they happen, and to get them to care faster when something goes wrong.

The problem, twice stated

Ankr’s Y Combinator listing frames the company’s current problem this way: “Adoption of Telehealth 1.0 has dropped to <5% because it’s inefficient and unintelligent.” The pitch is that generative AI can recreate the functions of clinic staff, front desk, medical assistants, scribes, so doctors can run a virtual clinic on demand.

That is a different problem from the one Rao described to the Chronicle in 2021, about cancer patients missing warning signs buried in dense medication information. Both versions point at the same underlying gap: clinical staff time is scarce, and much of what fills it does not require a doctor. What has changed is which piece of that gap Ankr is trying to fill, and who it sells to.

Founders

Dr. Arpit Rao, who also goes by Ray, describes himself as “a recovering cancer Doc” and “a 3x founder backed by YC and Medtech Innovator.” Independent video records from urotoday.com show him presenting oncology research, including a Phase I trial on prostate cancer treatment combinations. Ankr’s own about page calls him a “Renowned ONCOLOGIST.”

Shivani Rao is named as Ankr’s other co-founder by Tracxn, a private company data provider. No independent profile, professional background, or role description for her was found in this research.

Three products in six years

The company’s earliest public trace is an iOS app, Ankr Cancer Care Companion, whose App Store listing shows a copyright of “2018 Medconsult LLC,” a name that does not appear anywhere else in this research. By late 2021, per the Houston Chronicle, that product already served 26 clinics and more than 50,000 patients, and Rao hoped to double that reach within a year. In November 2021, Ankr won the inaugural Startup Showcase at Rice University’s Ion innovation hub, taking $10,000 in cash and free legal services from Baker Botts.

Tracxn records a legal entity, Ankr Health Corp., incorporated March 4, 2022, with a $500,000 seed round closing March 29, 2022. Parsers.vc lists Y Combinator and WorldQuant Ventures as investors, and Y Combinator’s own listings confirm Ankr Health in its Winter 2022 (W22) batch. In June 2023, Ankr was one of four Houston startups, and one of 61 worldwide out of nearly 1,200 applicants, selected for the MedTech Innovator accelerator cohort, per InnovationMap.

By 2025 the company was describing itself differently again. A company landing page built for JPMorgan’s healthcare conference introduces “Ankr 4X,” a platform aimed at pharmaceutical companies rather than clinics, built around a published side effect prediction model and, per an independent podcast description, “first major deal with AstraZeneca”. By 2026, Ankr’s main website had shifted again, to “Ankr VCX,” a set of named AI agents, Mira for phone calls, Sol for scribing, Frank, Gina and Gary for triage, prior authorization and billing, sold to medical practices as an alternative to hiring or offshoring staff.

What is proven, and what is still claimed

Operations track. Ankr has no FDA clearances and no registered clinical trials, which is expected for a workflow and communications product rather than a medical device. What can be checked instead is accelerator participation, one independently reported local award, and a set of customer and revenue claims that mostly rest on the company’s own materials or on private data providers rather than named, verifiable customers.

Read plainly: the accelerator history and the 2021 local award are the most solid facts here, confirmed by outlets with no financial stake in the company. Everything about revenue, funding total, and named customers comes from the company itself or from private data providers whose own numbers disagree.

What to watch

  • Whether any of the clinics, health systems, or pharma partners Ankr describes get named, by the company or by a partner.
  • A Form D or other public funding record, since none has appeared for Ankr Health as of this research.
  • Whether the pivot to “Ankr VCX” AI staffing agents produces independent coverage, case studies, or EHR marketplace listings beyond the company’s own site.
  • Consistency between the company’s own revenue and funding statements and third-party estimates, which currently disagree.
