Anthropic and Claude Healthcare Breakthroughs: Every Medical and Drug Discovery Move Since 2025
In 2025 Anthropic was selling Claude to drugmakers. By late 2026 it was running its own biology lab and starting its own drug programs. This page logs every health and life sciences move by Anthropic that we could source, and grades each result on the same evidence scale we use for every AI lab.
The short answer: Anthropic has built Claude into tools for researchers, clinicians and drugmakers, signed deals with Genmab, Bristol Myers Squibb and Novo Nordisk, bought Coefficient Bio and Mithril, confirmed its own wet lab and started its own drug programs. Its biggest results, an enzyme system resembling CRISPR that it says Claude found and protein binders designed by Claude that passed lab tests, are company-reported. We found no peer-reviewed paper or human trial for an Anthropic health or drug result as of October 28, 2026.
- Tier: Tier 1, frontier lab. Its own wet lab and drug programs now overlap with tier 2 work.
- Own models: Yes, the general-purpose Claude models. We found no biology-specific Anthropic model.
- Own wet lab: Yes (San Francisco Bay Area, confirmed September 2026)
- First health move: October 20, 2025: Claude for Life Sciences, its first dedicated life sciences product
- Furthest result so far: Company-reported, Molecule design
- Key partners: Genmab, Bristol Myers Squibb, Novo Nordisk, HealthEx
What Has Anthropic Done in Healthcare?
Anthropic has spent about a year turning Claude, a general-purpose AI model, into a research and operations tool for drugmakers and health systems, then added its own lab and its own drug programs. Most of its health record so far is products, deals and hires. The scientific results it has shared are company-reported and early stage.
The first phase was tools. Claude for Life Sciences launched on October 20, 2025, aimed at biotech and pharma teams, as SiliconANGLE reported. R&D World reported that it outperformed humans at lab protocol tasks and cut pharma documentation time, figures that came from Anthropic. In January 2026 Genmab announced a partnership to use Anthropic’s agentic AI in research and development, per its press release. On January 11, Anthropic launched Claude for Healthcare and partnered with HealthEx so users can connect their medical records, according to Fortune. Fierce Healthcare reported that the launch at the J.P. Morgan Healthcare Conference targeted health systems and payers.
The second phase was buying expertise. In April 2026 Anthropic acquired Coefficient Bio, a stealth AI startup, in a deal Fierce Biotech reported at $400 million. Novartis CEO Vas Narasimhan joined its board. In May, Bristol Myers Squibb announced a strategic agreement to make Claude Enterprise a shared platform across its global operations, according to the company’s press release. In June, AlphaFold co-creator John Jumper said he would leave Google DeepMind for Anthropic, as Bloomberg Government reported.
The third phase is its own science. On June 30, 2026, Anthropic released Claude Science, a product aimed at researchers and the pharma industry, as STAT reported. It published protein design work in which Claude’s binders passed lab tests. In September it confirmed a Bay Area wet lab, which Reuters reported it set up as it ramps an AI drug program (via The Star), announced an enzyme system it says Claude found and partnered with Novo Nordisk. In October it published a report on drug development work with six partner companies and bought Mithril, a one-person biotech, to start its own drug programs, as The Next Web reported.

Anthropic’s Biggest Results, and How Far Each Has Been Proven
None of Anthropic’s health or biology results has passed peer review or been tested in people yet. Every result below is company-reported, which is the second of five levels on our scale.
The enzyme system resembling CRISPR (September 2026). Anthropic says Claude found a new enzyme system that resembles the gene editing tool CRISPR, as Smithsonian Magazine reported, and investingLive reported that Claude scanned 200,000 enzymes to find it. A resemblance to CRISPR is not the same as a working editing tool. Evidence level: Company-reported. Stage: Research tool. What would prove it next: a peer-reviewed paper, and an outside lab confirming the enzymes work as described.
Protein binders designed by Claude (August 2026). Anthropic reported that Claude designed protein binders that were then validated in lab tests, as eWeek summarized. AI Weekly reported binders against 14 of 15 protein targets, and Anthropic released the dataset behind the run, which lets outside groups check the work. A binder that sticks to a target in a lab assay is a starting point, not a drug. Evidence level: Company-reported. Stage: Molecule design. What would prove it next: peer review, an independent group reproducing the binder results, and binders tested in a disease model.

Learn More →Partner drug development work (October 2026). Anthropic’s report on early progress in drug development describes work with six partner companies, per Crypto Briefing. Coverage reports that Claude cut drug development paperwork time by 89% (Upstox) and helped cancer-fighting cells work longer in lab tests (WinBuzzer). The headlines we could verify do not say which partner produced which result. Evidence level: Company-reported. Stage: Molecule design (the cancer work) and Operations (the paperwork). What would prove it next: data published by the partners themselves, and a named Claude-assisted molecule entering preclinical development. Our progress check on Anthropic’s partner results grades each result in detail.
Life sciences benchmarks and documentation time (October 2025). At the Claude for Life Sciences launch, R&D World reported Anthropic figures showing Claude outperforming humans on lab protocol tasks and reducing pharma documentation time. Evidence level: Company-reported. Stage: Operations. What would prove it next: an independent evaluation measuring time saved and error rates in regulated documents.
What PubMed shows. A PubMed search for Anthropic affiliations found Anthropic staff on papers outside health, and one Anthropic co-author on a short Nature Medicine piece titled “Toward a test of medical AI superintelligence,” written with researchers from Stanford, Harvard, Google, OpenAI, Microsoft, Amazon and ARPA-H, among others (PMID 42509372). It does not report a result. We found no peer-reviewed paper reporting an Anthropic health or drug result.

What This Means for You
If you are a patient, nothing Anthropic has done changes the treatments available to you today. Its drug programs are early, and none has reached a human trial. Claude for Healthcare can help you organize and understand your own records if you connect them, but it is not a diagnosis tool that has been tested in patient trials.
If you work in research or care, Claude is already licensed at several large drugmakers. Ask what each use was validated on and who checks the output before it touches a regulated decision. Treat the enzyme and protein results as promising leads until they pass peer review and outside replication, and judge Anthropic’s in-house drug programs by the same milestones as any biotech: a named target, animal data and a filing to start human trials.
