Xaira Therapeutics AI Drug Discovery: Timeline, Partners and Results

Xaira Therapeutics launched in 2024 with $1 billion in funding commitments to build AI models for drug discovery. Two years in, its public output is a large cell dataset and a virtual cell model, not yet a disclosed drug.

Presented By Our Partners

The short answer: Xaira Therapeutics launched on April 23, 2024 with $1 billion in funding commitments and former Stanford president Marc Tessier-Lavigne as CEO. Its biggest public results are X-Atlas/Orion, a genome-wide Perturb-seq dataset of about 8 million cells released in June 2025, and X-Cell, its first virtual cell model, released in March 2026. Both are company-reported research tools. We found no disclosed drug candidate or clinical trial as of October 2026, so its $1 billion buys a research platform that has not yet produced a named medicine.

  • Tier: 2, AI science lab
  • Own models: Yes (X-Cell virtual cell model)
  • Own wet lab: Yes. It generated and released its own 8 million cell Perturb-seq dataset
  • First health move: April 23, 2024, launch as an AI drug discovery and development company
  • Furthest result so far: Company-reported, Research tool
  • Tier 1 partners: None. We found no funding or partnership with OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Microsoft or Meta, or with the chip maker Nvidia

What Is Xaira Therapeutics?

Xaira Therapeutics is a South San Francisco drug company built around AI models for biology. It launched in April 2024 with $1 billion in funding commitments, as Bloomberg reported, under CEO Marc Tessier-Lavigne, a former president of Stanford University.

Xaira works on two layers of the problem. The first is data and models of cells: in June 2025 it released X-Atlas/Orion, which it described as the largest publicly available genome-wide Perturb-seq dataset, built from about 8 million cells, and in 2026 it released X-Cell, its first virtual cell model. The second is drug design, the reason it raised so much money. As of October 28, 2026, it had not disclosed a drug candidate, a target list or a clinical trial in any source we found.

The company has spent its first two years hiring a drug development team. It added a chief medical officer and chief technology officer in December 2024, a president and chief operating officer in July 2025, a head of business development in March 2026 and a senior vice president for translational science in July 2026. Hires like these usually come before clinical work, but a hire is not a result.

Xaira Therapeutics’ Biggest Results, and How Far Each Has Been Proven

Xaira’s public results are research tools, both company-reported. None has reached a drug candidate that the company has named.

X-Atlas/Orion cell dataset. In June 2025, Xaira released a genome-wide Perturb-seq dataset, which records how each cell’s gene activity changes when a single gene is switched off, covering about 8 million cells. Xaira called it the largest publicly available resource of its kind. Evidence level: Company-reported. Stage: Research tool. Releasing the data publicly lets others check it, which is a good sign. What would prove it next: a peer-reviewed paper and outside groups showing that models trained on it predict cell behavior better than models trained without it.

X-Cell virtual cell model. In March 2026, Xaira released X-Cell, its first virtual cell model. Virtual cell models are built to predict how cells respond to changes such as a drug or a gene edit. Coverage described it as the largest such model to date. Evidence level: Company-reported. Stage: Research tool. What would prove it next: published benchmarks against other virtual cell models and a prediction later confirmed in the lab. Drug programs. Xaira was funded to make medicines, but we found no disclosed drug candidate, target or trial. Evidence level: Announced. Stage: none disclosed. What would prove it next: a named development candidate, then a first clinical trial. For an investor, this is the main open question: the company has spent more than two years building data and models without showing which diseases they will be pointed at.

Published research footprint. A PubMed affiliation search on October 28, 2026 returned 12 records with at least one Xaira-affiliated author. In all 12, Xaira staff appear as co-authors on work led by universities or other companies, often listing a former employer alongside Xaira; none reports a Xaira drug program. Two are 2025 University of Washington preprints on protein binder design with David Baker among the authors and a Xaira-affiliated co-author (PMID 41256377, PMID 40631088). By contrast, the Baker lab’s 2025 Nature paper on designing antibodies from scratch with RFdiffusion lists only academic affiliations, not Xaira (PMID 41193805), so it should not be counted as a Xaira result.

Who Xaira Therapeutics Works With

Xaira has no tier 1 partner. We found no funding or partnership with OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Microsoft or Meta, or with Nvidia. It picked Oracle Cloud Infrastructure for its AI computing, according to an Oracle announcement; Oracle is a cloud vendor, not a tier 1 lab.

Its scientific ties run through people. PubMed shows a Xaira-affiliated scientist co-authoring protein design preprints from David Baker’s Institute for Protein Design at the University of Washington. Xaira runs its own lab work: it generated and released its own Perturb-seq cell dataset. It has announced no pharma partnership or licensing deal in the sources we found, though it hired a business development head in March 2026. Unlike Generate Biomedicines or Chai Discovery, it has no outside drug company validating its platform yet.

What to Watch Next

  • Xaira’s first named drug candidate or disclosed target.
  • A first clinical trial registration naming Xaira as sponsor.
  • A peer-reviewed paper on X-Atlas/Orion or X-Cell, with benchmarks against other models.
  • A first pharma partnership or licensing deal, now that it has a business development lead.
  • Any newly disclosed funding round and who leads it.

What This Means for You

If you are a patient, Xaira has no drug in trials, so nothing it has built affects your treatment today. Its value so far is in research tools that could, in time, help pick better drug targets.

If you work in research, X-Atlas/Orion is a public dataset you can use and test yourself, which is the fastest way to judge Xaira’s results. Watch for a peer-reviewed description of X-Cell and for Xaira’s first named program before treating its funding as a sign of clinical progress.

What is Xaira Therapeutics?

Xaira Therapeutics is a South San Francisco company that builds AI models for drug discovery and development. It launched in April 2024 with $1 billion in funding commitments, led by CEO Marc Tessier-Lavigne, a former president of Stanford University.

Does Xaira Therapeutics have a drug in clinical trials?

Not that we could find. As of October 2026, Xaira had not disclosed a drug candidate, target or clinical trial. Its public results so far are a large cell dataset and a virtual cell model.

What is X-Atlas/Orion?

X-Atlas/Orion is a genome-wide Perturb-seq dataset of about 8 million cells that Xaira released in June 2025. It records how cells change when individual genes are switched off, and Xaira called it the largest publicly available resource of its kind.

What is Xaira’s X-Cell model?

X-Cell is Xaira’s first virtual cell model, released in March 2026. Virtual cell models are built to predict how cells respond to changes such as a drug or gene edit. Its performance is company-reported and has not yet been peer reviewed.

Is Xaira connected to David Baker’s lab?

PubMed shows a Xaira-affiliated scientist co-authoring protein design preprints from David Baker’s lab at the University of Washington. The Baker lab’s 2025 Nature paper on AI-designed antibodies lists academic affiliations, not Xaira, so it is not a Xaira result.

Is Xaira funded by OpenAI, Google or Nvidia?

We found no funding or partnership between Xaira and OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Microsoft, Meta or Nvidia. Xaira uses Oracle Cloud Infrastructure for computing.
