Generate Biomedicines AI Drug Discovery: Timeline, Partners and Results

Generate Biomedicines designs protein drugs with generative AI it builds itself, and it now has an AI-engineered asthma antibody in Phase 3. Here is every dated move we could verify, and how far each result has been proven.

Presented By Our Partners

The short answer: Generate Biomedicines is a Flagship Pioneering company that trains its own generative models to design antibodies and other proteins, then tests them in its own lab. Its Chroma model was published in Nature in 2023, and its AI-optimized COVID-19 antibody GB-0669 was well tolerated in a 51-person first-in-human trial published in 2026. Its long-acting asthma antibody GB-0895 is in global Phase 3 studies, but no efficacy results have been reported, and it enters a field where one anti-TSLP drug is already approved.

  • Tier: 2, AI science lab
  • Own models: Yes. Chroma, a generative model for protein structures and sequences (PMID 37968394)
  • Own wet lab: Yes. The Chroma paper, written by Generate scientists, reports lab testing of 310 designed proteins
  • First health move: March 2021, when Flagship Pioneering named Mike Nally to lead Generate (the earliest dated move we could source)
  • Furthest result so far: Tested in people, Phase 1 (GB-0669, peer-reviewed). GB-0895 is in Phase 3 with no results yet
  • Tier 1 partners: None we could verify. Nvidia, the chip maker, which is outside our tier 1 list, backed the 2023 Series C

What Is Generate Biomedicines?

Generate Biomedicines is a Somerville, Massachusetts biotech that designs protein drugs, mainly antibodies, with generative AI models it trains itself. It was built by Flagship Pioneering and listed on Nasdaq in 2026, raising $400 million at $16 per share, according to pharmaphorum and Renaissance Capital. IPO Scoop reported that the stock fell in its Nasdaq debut.

Its core model is Chroma, described in Nature in November 2023 (PMID 37968394). Chroma samples new protein structures and sequences and can be steered toward shapes, symmetries or functions. Generate pairs that software with its own experiments and a clinical pipeline, and it also designs molecules for large drug companies: Amgen since January 2022 and Novartis since September 2024.

Its two named clinical programs are both antibodies. GB-0669 targets a conserved region of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein and finished a first-in-human safety trial. GB-0895 blocks TSLP, a signal from the airway lining that drives inflammation, and is in two global Phase 3 studies in severe asthma. Funding is not efficacy: more than $2.9 billion in combined reported deal ceilings from Amgen and Novartis, plus the IPO proceeds, say nothing yet about whether these drugs work.

Generate Biomedicines’ Biggest Results, and How Far Each Has Been Proven

Generate’s strongest evidence is a peer-reviewed protein design model and one completed Phase 1 trial. Its Phase 3 program has not yet produced data.

Chroma protein design model. Peer-reviewed, Research tool. The Nature paper reports that 310 Chroma-designed proteins were made and tested, that they were highly expressed and folded, and that two crystal structures matched the designs with a backbone deviation of about 1.0 angstrom (PMID 37968394). All authors were Generate staff, so the result has not been independently replicated in that paper. What would prove it next: a drug candidate whose design traces to Chroma succeeding in the clinic, or outside groups reproducing its design success rates.

GB-0669 first-in-human trial. Tested in people, Phase 1. In a randomized, placebo-controlled trial of 51 healthy adults aged 18 to 55 (36 on drug, 15 on placebo), single intravenous doses up to 2,400 mg caused no dose-limiting toxicities, all adverse reactions were mild (grade 1 or 2), and the half-life was 54 days (PMID 42446369). Serum virus neutralization rose at 600 and 1,200 mg. Seventeen of the 19 authors list Generate as an affiliation, so this is a company-run study in a peer-reviewed journal. The antibody was optimized with AI rather than invented from scratch, and healthy volunteers cannot show whether it treats COVID-19. What would prove it next: the Phase 2 trial at 1,200 mg in immunocompromised people with COVID-19 that the authors say the data support.

GB-0895 in Phase 3 for severe asthma. Announced, Phase 3. Generate announced global Phase 3 studies, SOLAIRIA-1 and SOLAIRIA-2, of this long-acting anti-TSLP antibody, which it says is engineered with AI for twice-yearly dosing (Generate release, AllSci). The target is already validated: a 2026 review in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology notes that tezepelumab is the only approved anti-TSLP drug and lists GB-0895 as one of 11 TSLP-targeting drugs in clinical development (PMID 42697279; most of its authors work for Amgen or AstraZeneca, which sell tezepelumab). So the question for GB-0895 is less whether blocking TSLP works than whether dosing twice a year matches an approved drug on asthma attacks. We found no published efficacy data for GB-0895, and reaching Phase 3 is a trial milestone, not a result. What would prove it next: the Phase 3 readouts on asthma attacks and lung function.

Who Generate Biomedicines Works With

Generate works with two large drug companies and is backed by Flagship Pioneering. Amgen signed a multi-target, multi-modality research collaboration in January 2022, reported by GEN at up to $1.9 billion, and expanded it in January 2024. Novartis signed a multi-target protein therapeutics deal in September 2024 that Fierce Biotech reported at more than $1 billion in potential payments. Those figures are deal ceilings, mostly milestones, not money already paid.

Tier 1 ties: we found no funding or partnership with OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Microsoft or Meta that we could verify. Nvidia, an AI chip maker rather than a tier 1 lab, was among the backers of the $273 million Series C in 2023, according to Boursorama. Generate runs its own lab: the Chroma paper describes in-house testing of hundreds of designed proteins, which is what places it in tier 2 rather than among companies that only build on other firms’ models.

What to Watch Next

These are the measurable events that would move Generate’s evidence level.

  • Results from the SOLAIRIA-1 and SOLAIRIA-2 Phase 3 studies of GB-0895 in severe asthma, including asthma attack rates and how they compare with tezepelumab’s.
  • Start of a Phase 2 trial of GB-0669 at 1,200 mg in immunocompromised people with COVID-19.
  • A named development candidate, milestone payment or option exercise disclosed under the Amgen or Novartis collaborations.
  • Independent groups reproducing Chroma’s design success rates.
  • Pipeline and cash updates in Generate’s quarterly SEC filings, starting with its report for the quarter ended June 30, 2026.

What This Means for You

If you are a patient, no Generate drug is approved, and none can be prescribed today. People with severe asthma may see GB-0895 Phase 3 studies recruiting; ClinicalTrials.gov lists SOLAIRIA-1 and its sites. If you already take an approved biologic for asthma, a trial drug is not a reason to switch on your own. Joining a trial is never a guarantee of benefit, so discuss it with your doctor.

If you work in research or care, Chroma is a published model you can evaluate on its own terms, and GB-0669 has peer-reviewed human safety data from a company-run trial. For investors, GB-0895 is the value driver: its Phase 3 readout will say more about Generate than any AI benchmark. Treat partnership values as signals of interest, not evidence, until trial results arrive.
