How to Share Wearable Data With Your Doctor: Which Devices Connect

Updated October 29, 2026. We checked every wearable and home monitor we have reviewed for a real path to a clinician.

Presented By Our Partners

Short answer: most wearables cannot send data straight into your doctor’s chart. Of the 176 wearables and home monitors we have reviewed, 67 have some confirmed way to get readings to a clinician. 32 are built for it, either prescribed by a clinician or sold into clinic monitoring programs. 35 more offer a share feature or a health record link you control. The other 109 have no clinician pathway we could confirm, so the best you can do is bring a screenshot or export to your visit.

Key takeaways

  • Data reaches a doctor four ways: a prescribed device, a remote patient monitoring (RPM) program, a health record link, or a file you send yourself.
  • Medicare and most insurers only pay for RPM when the device meets the FDA definition of a medical device and uploads readings automatically. Most fitness watches do not qualify.
  • Blood pressure cuffs, glucose sensors, ECG devices and sleep apnea tests are the categories clinicians actually use.
  • Apple, Samsung, Google and Oura are building links to health systems, but none of them feeds your own doctor’s chart automatically yet.
  • Garmin, Polar, COROS and Suunto watches have no share with doctor feature.

How does wearable data reach a doctor?

Wearable data reaches a doctor in one of four ways, and only the first two put readings in front of a clinician without you doing anything.

  1. Prescribed devices. Your clinician orders the device and the results go straight to them. Examples are the Zio patch, prescription CGMs like the Dexcom G7, home sleep apnea tests and CPAP machines.
  2. Remote patient monitoring programs. A clinic enrolls you, gives or sells you a connected device, and a care team watches your readings. Cellular or Wi-Fi blood pressure cuffs are the most common example.
  3. Health record links. Some consumer apps can exchange data with a health system you choose. Apple Health’s Share with Provider feature and Samsung’s work with Xealth are the clearest examples.
  4. Files you send. ECG PDFs, sleep reports and trend screenshots that you upload to your patient portal or bring to an appointment. Almost every device can do this, but your doctor has to choose to look.

What is remote patient monitoring and who pays for it?

Remote patient monitoring is a Medicare benefit that pays clinics to supply a connected device and review your readings between visits. It is the main reason a doctor would want your home data, because it gives them time and payment to act on it.

Medicare RPM rules require a device that meets the FDA definition of a medical device and sends readings automatically, not numbers you type in. Your clinician usually has to know you as an established patient, and the program needs your consent. The main billing codes are:

CPT code What it pays for
99453 Setting up the device and teaching you to use it, once per episode
99454 Device supply with readings on 16 or more days in a 30 day period
99445 Device supply with readings on 2 to 15 days in a 30 day period (new for 2026)
99470 The first 10 minutes of clinician management time in a month (new for 2026)
99457 The first 20 minutes of clinician management time in a month, including a live conversation with you
99458 Each additional 20 minutes of management time

For you, that usually means the device is supplied by the program and you pay your normal Part B coinsurance on the monthly service. Private insurers and Medicare Advantage plans set their own rules. Prescribed tests like ECG patches, CGMs and sleep studies are billed under their own codes, so they are not RPM even though the data goes to your doctor.

Does sharing home data actually change care?

The strongest evidence is for blood pressure. Home readings reviewed by a care team lower blood pressure more than usual care, and new studies keep pointing the same way.

  • A 2026 study of 7,256 Medicare patients in a cellular blood pressure cuff program found blood pressure fell by about 8/4 mm Hg and the share of patients at goal rose from 19.1% to 36.1%, with fewer hospital admissions. Several authors work for Cadence, the company that runs the program (Mayo Clinic Proceedings, PMID 42658114).
  • A rural resident clinic program with 72 Medicare patients saw blood pressure drop by 11.4/3.4 mm Hg (American Journal of Medical Quality, 2026, PMID 42831558).
  • A meta-analysis of 7 studies in people with chronic kidney disease found home blood pressure telemonitoring lowered systolic pressure by 8.8 mm Hg (Canadian Journal of Kidney Health and Disease, 2022, PMID 35756330).
  • Coverage matters. Patients who switched from traditional Medicare to Medicare Advantage were less likely to get RPM and had more hypertension hospitalizations (JAMA Network Open, 2026, PMID 42536372).
  • Clinicians report real barriers, including CGM data that does not fit their electronic health record (Journal of the American Board of Family Medicine, 2024, PMID 39455273).

Evidence for smartwatch sleep, readiness and HRV scores is far thinner. Treat those as personal trends to discuss, not numbers your doctor will act on.

What changed in 2026 for the big brands?

  • Apple: Share with Provider lets you send chosen Health data to participating health systems, and ECG recordings export as a PDF.
  • Samsung: Samsung bought the care platform Xealth and started connecting Samsung Health to participating health systems in July 2026.
  • Google and Fitbit: the Google Health app, which replaced the Fitbit app, can now pull in your medical records. We found no automatic feed to your clinic.
  • Oura: Oura joined the CMS ACCESS model through Counsel Health and links clinical records through Flexpa. Your own doctor still gets no automatic feed.
  • WHOOP: WHOOP added on demand clinician consults and lab testing inside its app, which is care from WHOOP’s network rather than your own doctor.
  • Garmin: Garmin Connect has no share with doctor feature. Garmin Health licenses data to research and monitoring partners instead.
  • Withings: Withings runs a clinician RPM program and an athenahealth partnership. Its FDA cleared BPM Connect cuff is the model sold through that program.

How do I share my wearable data with my doctor today?

  1. Ask your clinic whether it runs a remote patient monitoring program and which devices it supports.
  2. If you use an iPhone, check whether your health system appears in Apple Health under Share with Provider.
  3. Export ECG recordings as PDFs and upload them to your patient portal with a short note on when they happened.
  4. Bring a one page summary of trends, not raw daily data. Pick the two or three numbers tied to your question.
  5. Write down the device name and model, because accuracy varies a lot between products.

What should I ask my doctor about my wearable?

  • Do you run a remote monitoring program, and does my insurance cover it?
  • Which of my readings would change what you do?
  • How should I send readings, through the portal, a program or at visits?
  • Is my device accurate enough for this decision, or do you want a prescribed test?

Frequently asked questions

Can my doctor see my Apple Watch data?

Only if you share it. Apple Health’s Share with Provider works with participating health systems, and you can export ECG recordings as a PDF for your portal. Nothing goes to your doctor automatically.

Does Medicare pay for remote patient monitoring?

Yes. Medicare Part B covers RPM when a clinician orders it, the device meets the FDA medical device definition and readings upload automatically. Your usual coinsurance applies.

Can I use my own smartwatch for remote patient monitoring?

Usually not. Most clinic programs supply their own FDA cleared cuff, scale or meter that uploads automatically. Consumer smartwatches rarely meet the requirements for RPM billing.

Which wearable is best for sharing data with a doctor?

It depends on the condition. For blood pressure, an FDA cleared connected cuff in a clinic program. For diabetes, a CGM shared through the maker’s clinic platform. For heart rhythm, a KardiaMobile with a clinic on KardiaPro or a prescribed ECG patch.

Do Garmin watches share data with doctors?

Not directly. Garmin Connect has no share with doctor feature. You can export activity and health stats or show trends at a visit.

How we built this guide

We checked each device we have reviewed against maker support pages, clinic program pages, trade press and PubMed on October 29, 2026. A device counts as sharing with clinicians only when we found a working feature, program or clearance. Where we could not confirm a pathway we say so, and we will update entries as makers add features. This guide is general information, not medical advice. For devices and doctors in one place, see our complete guide to health wearables and the Healthcare Discovery doctor directory.
